The Happy Box CSA Program

We have to mention that there is an element of season in the home-grown produce in this program:

Some of the greens like lettuce, beets are year round; others like spinach, kale, collard greens, mizuna, tat soi, arugula, mustard are in the spring, fall and winter.

The fruits are seasonal: Strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, eggplants, zucchini, melons, watermelons and okra.  They start from end of May through October. The herbs are pretty much year round and include green onion, green garlic, italian parsley, cilantro, chives, dill and basil. The chives, dill and basil are only through the summer. In the spring and early summer we grow carrots, beets, radishes, cabbage, and broccoli, in the fall –carrots again, daikon radish, small radishes, turnips, rutabagas. From July through September we also have sweet corn.

We also diversify the box with some certified organic fruits like apples, bananas, mangos, avocados. We are buying them from an organic supplier. Many times the wholesale organic produce unlike the conventional produce is not very uniform in quality and appearance. It has not been sprayed with fungicides and bruising during transport may result in earlier spoilage. We do our best removing any bruised or bad piece of fruit and vegetables but again unintentionally one may be found in your box and we ask for your understanding! 

It is difficult to produce everything consistently in Ohio, because of the climate. Some weeks when we don’t have enough of our own produce we buy more from the organic distributor. That way your boxes are always full and the value is always high.

All of the produce is picked the same day, just before it is delivered. Every week in your box we include a weekly bulletin. It tells you which produce is from the organic distributor, and which is our own grown, also what kind and amount of vegetables to expect in the following week.
